The new edition of Verdi’s masterpiece Otello, starring Renée Fleming, is now available on DVD. Fleming combines a long history with the role of Desdemona, one of her first successes in her 30-year career. Alongside a strong cast with Johan Botha as Otello and Michael Fabiano as Cassio, the soprano fills the entire hall of the Metropolitan Opera with her unmistakable and gentle interpretation of “The Willow Song” and “Ave Maria”.
This performance, which was already recorded in 2012, was probably its last on one of the big stages, which makes the recording a historically valuable document.
In addition to the beautiful realisation, lavish sets and baroque costumes make Elijah Moshinsky’s production of Verdi’s masterpiece a unique experience.
