Da Camera (Ensemble)

The specialist early-music ensemble Da Camera marks the 250th anniversary of Telemanns death with this unique recording of original trio sonatas involving recorder and viol. These are among the greatest pieces Telemann ever composed. As he wrote in 1740: “how could I possibly remember everything I composed for strings and winds? I particularly devoted myself to the composing of trios. People even flattered me as having done my best work here.” The musicians of Da Camera heartily agree. The ingenuity and variety of music, structures, and instrumental ensemble, combined with fascinating notes by the recorder player Emma Murphy, make this album a must-have for everyone, from Telemann’s many enthusiasts to those curious about early music.

Reviews

BBC Music Magazine Christmas 2017

“Four trios from the ‘Darmstadt’ manuscripts are persuasively taken by treble viol (rather than violin), recorders and harpsichord. Playing and recording sparkle. – 4 out of 5 stars

Gramophone Magazine December 2017

“Immensely natural readings…As for variety, there’s everything here, from Telemann’s traditional German contrapuntal style to his delight in Eastern European folk music and his adoption of the new ‘mixed style’; and Da Camera themselves hit every one of these nails on the head.

Classical Music December 2017

“Augmenting these joyful pieces are two gallant and exploratory solo keyboard Fantasies, played with skill and aplomb by Stephen Devine. A brilliant, life-enhancing disc. – 5 out of 5 stars
