Orchestra of Opera North – Howard Shelley.
Howard Shelley was recently awarded an OBE for services to music. Here he conducts the Orchestra of Opera North from the piano in three major concertos by Schumann, Grieg and Saint-Saëns, which are unusually brought together on one disc. Shelley explains that his approach to all three popular works has been to return to the metronome markings in the scores. This has meant faster tempos in some sections and a lighter lyricism than we are used to. ‘Directing a highly responsive orchestra from the keyboard has also allowed me great freedom in realising my ideas’, Shelley adds.
