The conductor Reinhard Goebel is one of the most famous personalities in the German classical music world, an “enlightenment in a sea of mediocrity” (New York Times), a world-renowned mediator of historical performance practice and a never-ending source of repertoire treasures

His Sony Classical recording of the Brandenburg Concertos with the Berlin Baroque Soloists received the best reviews and an opus classic worldwide and is considered a new reference. On the occasion of the great Beethoven Year 2020, “Beethoven’s World” is now being published as the result of a year-long research and music project in which Goebel explores both unknown works by Beethoven and his contemporaries, and in doing so wants to encourage a new classification of Beethoven

Sony Classical is now releasing the first album of “Beethoven’s World” with violin concertos by Franz Clement. Clement (1780-1842) was considered one of the great violin virtuosos of his time and Beethoven dedicated his Violin Concerto to him, which he entitled “per clemenza per Clement” and which can be seen as a reaction to Clement’s first own Violin Concerto of 1805. The similarities between Clement’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto op. 61 are by no means accidental, but rather direct references, winking balls and creative reactions to one another, which are then repeated in reverse in Clement’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor / D major, written a little later

On this album, both violin concertos by Franz Clement can be heard for the first time – the second violin concerto is a world premiere recording. The works of Mirijam Contzen were recorded with the WDR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Reinhard Goebel. Fascinating music that offers a different view of the exceptional artist Beethoven.
