Switzerland has always exerted a great attraction on Russian composers. Peter Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky, for example, were impressed by the beauty of the Swiss Alpine landscape. The composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was even to find his new home here. Not far from Lucerne, on Lake Lucerne, the famous composer and pianist had a magnificent house built in 1930, the “Villa Senar”, and found the peace and quiet here to compose works that are famous today. In the summer of 1934 he wrote his highly virtuoso “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini” for piano and orchestra there, and one year later his 3rd Symphony
Both works have now been recorded by the outstanding Lucerne Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Gaffigan. The Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov plays the “Paganini Rhapsody” for piano and orchestra. The original Steinway grand piano by Rachmaninoff, which has stood in the Villa Senar since 1934, was used for the recording of this piece
The limited first edition of this album is particularly high quality: It is a small hardcover booklet with CD and a lavishly designed booklet with over 70 pages. This contains a comprehensive text on Rachmaninoff and the works written by specialists and the Rachmaninoff Foundation, as well as quotations from letters written by the composer. The booklet of the limited edition is particularly attractive because it contains numerous previously unpublished photographs of the composer, which the composer’s family and the Rachmaninoff Foundation have made available only for this edition.
