“Ballads within a dream” is the name of the new album by Hille Perl (gamba) and Andreas Arend (theorbo). With Clare Wilkinson (soprano) and Veronika Skuplik (violin) they have recorded a magical and entertaining panorama of English baroque music. Folk songs and ballads meet songs by Henry Purcell as well as lute songs and solo improvisations for theorbo and virtuoso string music. The album was conceived by Andreas Arend, who has already recorded a special baroque album with violist Nils Mönkemeyer.

The round of “Ballads within a Dream” opens with a graceful “Love Song” by John Blow, who was probably the teacher of Henry Purcell, the most famous English composer of the 17th century. This song as well as Purcell’s well-known ballad “Music for a While” and other often slightly melancholic songs like “Have you seen the white lily grow?” by Robert Johnson and “Rest, sweet nymphs” by Francis Pilkington but also folk songs like “I will give my love an apple” or “Drink to me only with thine eyes” can be heard with the outstanding English mezzo-soprano Clare Wilkinson.

There are also two traditional melodies (Out of this wood & Come wait upon him), whose text is based on William Shakespeare’s famous play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The instrumental pieces include the world-famous traditional “Greensleeves” as well as brilliant chamber music pieces, including a violin sonata by Henry Eccles (with Veronika Skuplik on the baroque violin) and a trio sonata by Godfrey Finger, whose real name was Gottfried Finger and who came from Moravia.
