All information available in advance indicated that the “New Year’s Concert 2020 of the Vienna Philharmonic” will be one of the first-class performances from the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein.

Andris Nelsons stood on the conductor’s podium at the New Year’s Concert for the first time on 1 January 2020. But that he works extremely well with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was already beyond question. The Latvian is considered one of the most talented conductors of his generation and has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in subscription concerts in Vienna and on concert tours in Europe, North America and Asia. Proof of the high quality of the resulting work is certainly the recordings of the complete Beethoven symphonies released in 2019.

Traditions characterize a large part of the New Year’s Concert. This also means that the upcoming anniversaries of the beginning year will be included in the programme. In 2020 Vienna will celebrate the 80th New Year’s Concert, 100 years of the Salzburg Festival, 150 years of the Vienna Musikverein and the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. The 150th anniversary of Josef Strauss’ death was also commemorated.

In 2020 nine pieces celebrated their New Year’s concert premiere again. The concert began with the overture to Carl Michael Ziehrer’s operetta “Die Landstreicher”. From Josef Strauss, who is being given special consideration this year, there was the waltz “Liebesrüße”, the “Liechtenstein March” and the Polka française “Cupido”. Eduard Strauss participated with the fast polka “Bang und Fall” and the polka mazur “Eisblume”, Josef Hellmesberger junior with the “Gavotte” and Hans Christian Lumbye with the “Postillon-Galopp”. Ludwig van Beethoven has never before been played in the New Year’s Concert. On the occasion of his 250th birthday, the numbers 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10 of his “12 Contretänze WoO 14” sounded.

When Beethoven completed work on his counter dances in 1802, this ballroom dance was already out of fashion. His counter-dances, with their sweeping, rousing character, are on the one hand typical representatives of their kind, but on the other hand they also bear Beethoven’s personal signature. Unusually as a ballet repertoire they formed the musical basis for one of the two ballet interludes of the television broadcast. Together with the traditional interval film, which also revolves around Ludwig van Beethoven’s birthday, the ballet interludes form the additional material for the DVD and Blu-ray edition of the New Year’s Concert.

In 2020, the New Year’s Concert was broadcast for the 62nd time by ORF from the magnificent Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The whole concert was recorded by 14 cameras with HD pictures and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. This traditional concert reached more than 50 million spectators in over 90 countries worldwide.
