Helmuth Rilling’s benchmark-setting recording of all Bach cantatas in a new collector’s edition At the heart of Bach’s incredible work are his more than 200 cantatas. These are nothing less than timeless masterpieces, most of which have been performed only once or twice. Within only 20 years Bach composed the church cantatas – beginning with cantata 150, written around 1705 in Arnstadt, ending with the cantata cycle for the entire church year 1725. Although it is “commercial music” composed for use in the church, all these works are permeated by Bach’s inexhaustible imagination. At the other end of Bach’s creative work are a handful of secular cantatas. Bach wrote most of them for the students of the Leipzig Collegium Musicum, beginning with the beloved “Jagd” cantata BWV 208 from the year 1717. They are occasional works, composed to splendidly accompany royal celebrations as well as entertainment for the Zimmermann coffee house. For his secular cantatas, too, Bach used all his skill, all his genius.

Helmuth Rilling is the first conductor ever to have completely recorded Bach’s cantatas. Even 25 years after they were published for the first time in their entirety on the occasion of Bach’s 300th birthday in 1985, they remain the standard against which all other interpretations are measured.
