Hungarian cellist Janos Starker is one of the greatest musical personalities of the 20th century. He was accepted at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music at the age of eleven, and was educated by teachers such as Zoltan Kodaly, Bela Bartok and Ernst von Dohnanyi. He had a superb technique, an exquisite tone, and his playing was as elegant as it was intense. This Documents compilation of 12 original albums on 10 CDs confirms all too clearly his standing as a virtuoso and artist. Of course, It includes Bach’s Cello Suites – the first of Starker’s four recordings of these famous compositions, a must-have in any cello-lover’s collection. Also included are Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas with the congenial pianist Gyorgy Sebok from 1959, as well as concertos by Dvorak, Haydn, Boccherini, Schumann and Brahms. The collection is rounded off by the highly praised recital – a journey through music history of sorts – with Gerald Moore from 1958, as well as excursions into Italian baroque music and Spanish music of the 19th century. Kodaly’s Cello Sonata and an arrangement for cello of the Horn Concerto in E flat major by Mozart are included as bonus recordings. |
