Chamber music with friends at the highest level: The Brahms sextets with the Capucon brothers – live Looking over the discography of the brothers Renaud and Gautier Capucon, one can see a great focus on Brahms: violin sonatas, piano quartets, the violin concerto and the double concerto. Little by little, a great Brahms edition is growing up with the Capucon brothers. Now follows another milestone on this path with the two string sextets The violist Gerard Causse, present in many joint productions, the Austrian violinist Christoph Koncz, the cellist Clemens Hagen and the French violist Marie Chilemme complement the two brothers, who here once again realize their concept of chamber music with friends at the highest level. And this time, too, the album offers the live recording of a memorable event: the six played the two works in 2016 at the Aix Easter Festival – presenting themselves in a wonderful balance of structural depth and fresh musicality The two sextets already stand out from the usual repertoire because of their instrumentation. With them, Brahms explored the art of independent voice leading. He succeeded masterfully in conveying not only technical sophistication but also great emotional depth. The second sextet, for example, is connected to an unhappy love affair: in 1858 Brahms broke off his engagement to a certain Agathe von Siebold, whose name he musically shaped as notes to one of the themes. Reviews “And it is an experience that Capucon, Koncz, Caussé, Chilemme, Capucon and Hagen offer us here. From the first chord on, we are accompanied by a rich string sound set in the lower regions, which is not designed to be listenable, but allows Brahms’ sextets to shine in full sonority.” (Radio Klassik) |
