Ever since the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Jonathan Nott began working on Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, they have been writing a special chapter in recording history. Every recording released so far has caused a sensation because, in addition to the mastery of the musical craft, new perspectives have always been opened up. And now, with Symphony No. 7, one encounters a masterpiece that Theodor W. Adorno called a “weak piece” as a “weak piece”. There is nothing of such irritating assessments to be heard from Jonathan Nott and his orchestra heard. He presents a magnificent work, in formal design, in instrumentation and above all in content “My time will come,” was a statement made by Gustav Mahler. This applies especially to Symphony No. 7, its time has come with this recording the time of limited analysis and perplexity is over: finally the music speaks! |
