In view of the forthcoming 200th birthday of Franz Liszt in 2011, the Liszt Lied Edition is going to present for the first time this composer’s complete “lieder” (songs) on six CDs. There will be several first recordings and even previously unpublished works. Although Liszt is mostly considered an important virtuoso pianist and composer of symphonic epics, his “lieder” offer the essence of his entire oeuvre. Many of his musical ideas were born in the “lied” repertoire, since songs are often the direct expression of the composer’s personality and may disclose his most inner feelings. Liszt was a master of melody and many of his “lieder” are captivating for the beauty of their vocal parts. However, the expressive quality of the music is at the fore. Charles Spencer who was Christa Ludwig’s last accompanist, will be the pianist on all discs.

Volume 2 of the Liszt Lied Edition, “Was Liebe sei”, is presented by German mezzo-soprano Janina Baechle who is much admired for her wonderful timbre. Since 2004 a member of the Vienna State Opera, she is indispensable in the roles of Ortrud, Brangäne and Quickly. On other opera stages she could be seen and heard as the nurse in “The Woman Without a Shadow” or Amneris in “Aida”. However, Janina Baechle has always had a strong inclination to do concerts. In recent years, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have invited her to sing in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony (under Seiji Ozawa) and “The Song of the Earth” (under Kent Nagano). Many listeners were surprised to hear that this voice, fit for the great Wagner parts, was also able to master a most tender pianissimo. Janina Baechle has been touring from recital to recital presenting the most astonishing programs — in German, English, French, Italian or Russian. Of course she feels comfortable with Brahms, Wolf and Mahler whom she appreciates in particular.

Many of Liszt’s “lieder” are chance compositions: The lyrics to “Was Liebe sei”, for instance, came from the celebrated actress Charlotte von Hagn, with whom Liszt had an intimate relationship in the early 1840s. Liszt’s vocal compositions often do not fit well within the genre of song but rather within that of opera. Pieces that have repetitive lyrics and operatic codas, such as “Die Loreley” (by Heine) or “Mignons Lied” (by Goethe), are representative of a specific type of aria. Mr. Tichatschek, the original “Rienzi” and “Tannhäuser,” performed “Die Loreley” on February 27, 1844, in Dresden, in all likelihood accompanied by the composer. The same piece was performed earlier, on February 27, 1842, in Berlin, by Caroline Ung(h)er, a Hungarian-born, German-speaking prima donna.
